Bradbury Park Playscape by Alcorn Middleton – Redefining Playground Design in Brisbane

Bradbury Park Playscape, designed by Alcorn Middleton, an award-winning architectural and design firm in Brisbane, redefines playground design with its innovative approach. Located in Kedron and commissioned by Brisbane City Council, this state-of-the-art playground engages visitors of all ages, with a special focus on the often-overlooked 10- to 15-year-old age group. The project exemplifies Alcorn Middleton’s dedication to creative design, sustainability, and community engagement, setting a new benchmark for playgrounds in Brisbane.

Design Philosophy: Bradbury Park Playscape focuses on risk-taking play, encouraging children to explore and develop resilience. The design, inspired by the ‘Biological City,’ uses materials that reflect local flora and fauna, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and environmental awareness.

Key Features:

  • Innovative Play Structures: Designed under the theme of Byways & Hollows, we aimed to create undefined play around the idea of an infinite loop, providing children with alternate routes and engaging in risk-reward adventure play.
  • Sustainable Materials: Charred timber cladding mimics the local ironbark trees, blending harmoniously with the environment while offering durability and reducing maintenance for Brisbane City Council. Our focus was limiting the use of plastics often associated with playgrounds, the architecture itself becomes the dominant play feature with very few proprietary items.
  • Inclusive Accessibility: Designed to ensure all visitors, including those with disabilities, can enjoy the playground. Features like the accessible underside of the playscape promote social equity and encourage parents and adults to engage with the play, strengthening family bonds.
  • Integrated Shading: The structure was designed to shade the play, under, within and beyond, negating the need for artificial structures, whilst enhancing comfort.
  • Landscape Integration: The play extends beyond the main structure as though they are relics of the main structure broken down, these provide exciting and challenging ways to gain access to the main structure.
  • Bringing Arts to the Suburbs: Serving as an open-air museum, the playscape enriches community life through various activities and thoughtfully designed spaces, whether transiting through or engaging with. Harnessing natural light and sensor-operated misting systems makes the playgrounddynamic and engaging, transforming a typically static environment. This reflects Alcorn Middleton's signature approach of incorporating theatrical elements to create dynamic and immersive experiences in their projects.

Community and Educational Impact:

More than just a playground, Bradbury Park Playscape is a vibrant community hub that encourages repeated visits and engagement. The design prioritises the importance of risk in play, helping children develop problem-solving skills and resilience. Educational elements are woven throughout the playscape, teaching visitors about local ecology and sustainable practices. By creating spaces for both adults and children, Alcorn Middleton fosters stronger family bonds and promotes a deeper respect for good design and environmental stewardship.
